Almost every American president has been faced with the scourge of the political tell-all, as former political operatives, hangers-on and senior administration figures, from secretary of state to CIA director, rush to spill the beans on their time near the centre of power. Unfortunately for Donald Trump, that moment has come sooner rather than later. Less than a year into his presidency, Michael Wolff has published a new book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House , one of the first attempts to lift the lid on the Trump presidency. Queues of impatient readers lined up for hours outside bookstores on publication night, publishers Henry Holt are racing to print new copies, and an internet meme has been born showing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un chuckling hysterically as he leafs through the book. All the time the author is gleefully looking on as the sales roll in. Wolff himself is a problematic figure. Controversy accompanied his book on Rupert Murdoch, when he was accused of stretching the truth.

M ichael Wolff is back and not with a whimper. The latest installment of his Trump chronicles picks up where Fire and Fury ended. Once again, it leaves the president bruised and readers shaking their heads. None escape unscathed. Steve Bannon supplies a running commentary for which Wolff calls him his Virgil. Much weirder. Note the use of the present tense.

E veryone knew what was in this book before anyone had read it, and the scoops skimmed off in the pre-publication headlines are now old news. But beyond such acts of exposure, what makes the book significant is its sly, hilarious portrait of a hollow man, into the black hole of whose needy, greedy ego the whole world has virtually vanished. Wolff deplores Trump, explains the conditions that made him possible, and accuses us all of colluding in this madness. The Fox ideologue Roger Ailes concluded that he lacked both principles and backbone. To do him credit, Trump never wanted to be president, and, Wolff suggests, was as appalled as the rest of us when he won. Trump has no interest in devising legislation or conducting foreign policy; his time is spent watching himself on television, and Wolff charges journalists and news anchors with a reciprocal obsession.

Donald Trump. GQ columnist Michael Wolff provides a gripping account of an arsonist President, and his comedy cast of West Wing rivals. It is Donald Trump 's former chief strategist that the most time is spent on, because he is the one with the least to lose, and the biggest axe to grind.

President Donald Trump and the staff of his presidential campaign and White House. The title refers to a quote by Trump about the conflict with North Korea. The book became a New York Times number one bestseller. Reviewers generally accepted Wolff's portrait of a dysfunctional Trump administration, but were skeptical of many of Wolff's particular claims. The book highlights descriptions of Trump's behavior, chaotic interactions among senior White House staff, and derogatory comments about the Trump family by former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon.
