The type of equipment you use, the engine within, and the temperature outside determines what type of oil to use, how much you need and the cost of the oil. Synthetic oils are an acceptable oil at all temperatures. Use of synthetic oil does not alter required oil change intervals.

Its air intake system is sealed tighter so that dirt doesn't get inside the engine and contaminate the oil, and the engine runs cooler so that heat doesn't break down the lubricant. The four-stroke mower engine is designed to last the life of the equipment it's used on, which could be about 12 years, without an oil change. Briggs says the engine will set a precedent in the lawn and garden equipment industry, and none of its competitors has an engine that doesn't require an oil change. The new design stems partly from consumer research that showed people understood the value of changing engine oil, to increase the life span of their mower, but they didn't necessarily perform the maintenance.
For optimum performance, you should change the oil in your small engine after the first five hours of use and then annually, or every 50 hours of use whichever comes first. Start the engine and run it until it is warm. Stop the engine. Clean around the oil fill and drain plug area to prevent dirt and debris from falling into the crankcase see photo at right. Remove the dipstick, if equipped. Tilt the mower deck with the air filter or spark plug side up, and position some newspaper and an oil pan or jug beneath the mower.
