The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law embodies a vibrant global community of world-class expertise in economics, education, finance, human geography, international studies, law, management, politics, social policy, social work and sociology, attracting talented staff and students from around the world and forging strong links with international organisations and research councils. The faculty offers over 40 single and joint honours undergraduate degree courses and more than 70 postgraduate programmes with a high percentage linked to professional and research informed practice providing high quality teaching in a vibrant and inclusive learning environment. The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law FSSL offers excellent support for research and research-related activities, and actively cultivates an inter-school, inter-disciplinary ethos. There are numerous research groups and clusters operating at both School and Faculty levels. When research intensity the proportion of staff submitted was taken into account, five of our nine submissions were ranked in the top five by Times Higher Education, two others were in the top ten, and one ranked 11th. Overall, on intensity, FSSL ranks second in the country.
The School of Education promotes effective learning by educating future educators and delivering multidisciplinary research and development work. We are a large, international community of students and staff working in close partnership with academics and practitioners at local, national and international levels. Our teaching programmes span postgraduate teacher education, masters degrees and doctoral programmes ranging from the deeply reflective to the highly technical. Our students benefit from the strength of our research, the breadth of our academic expertise and excellent resources in our newly-refurbished Education Library. Our internationally-recognised researchers and national and international visitors create a collaborative and vibrant research culture. We have an extensive portfolio of funded research projects supported by bodies such as the Economic and Social Research Council and the Department for International Development.
The faculty's teaching is characterised by small group tutorials combined with lectures and formative coursework. Our courses are delivered by academics who are working at the forefront of their disciplines embedding the latest ideas and findings within their teaching. Each student is supported by a personal tutor who advises them on both academic and personal matters throughout their time in the faculty, ensuring their university life is happy and productive. For those who want to prepare for postgraduate research or use research in the workplace, we deliver specialist taught programmes that provide a strong grounding in critical thinking and research methodologies. Our vocational programmes provide continuous professional development in education, legal studies and social work. These programmes build doctoral students' intellectual capacity and research skills and prepare them for careers in the global economy.
