Costa Concordia disaster , the capsizing of an Italian cruise ship on January 13, , after it struck rocks off the coast of Giglio Island in the Tyrrhenian Sea. More than 4, people were rescued, though 32 people died. Francesco Schettino, were charged with various crimes. The Concordia was known for its luxuries. It featured four swimming pools, a casino, and reportedly the largest spa on a ship. In July the vessel undertook its maiden voyage, a seven-day cruise of the Mediterranean Sea , with stops in Italy, France, and Spain. That became its standard route.

By Wendy Laursen The wreck was towed to Molo ex Superbacino where it will be recycled by the Ship Recycling Consortium — a group formed by Saipem 51 percent and San Giorgio del Porto 49 percent. These two companies joined forces in September with the aim of providing green ship dismantling services. Around 50, tons of steel and 2, tons of copper are expected to be recovered from the vessel. The dismantling and recycling project is being carried out in four separate operational phases requiring up to people at a time. Around 80 percent of the vessel is anticipated to be able to be recycled.

This refloated the damaged ship some two metres off the sea bed. It was then painstakingly shifted into deeper water and floated higher, in an operation expected which took several days.

With water flooding in and the ship listing , she drifted back towards the island and grounded near shore, then rolled onto her starboard side, lying in an unsteady position on a rocky underwater ledge. The evacuation of Costa Concordia took over six hours and of the 3, passengers and 1, crew known to have been aboard, 32 died. The wreck of the luxury liner Costa Concordia was refloated today ready to be towed away for scrap, two and a half years after it capsized off the Italian coast, killing 32 people. The rusty hulk of the once-gleaming-white metre ship, which ran aground on rocks near the Tuscan holiday island of Giglio while carrying out a display manoeuvre, had been resting on a temporary platform since being righted a year ago. In what has become one of the largest salvage operations in history , air was pumped into 30 large metal boxes, or sponsons, attached around the hull of the , tonne ship. The air forced out the water in the sponsons, lifting the vessel off the underwater platform. Paying for the disaster, including breaking up the vessel and repairing the damage to Giglio, is likely to cost the ship's owner and operator Costa Crociere, more than 1. The hulk will be demolished and scrapped in Genoa by a consortium including oil services company Saipem and Genoa-based companies Mariotti and San Giorgio.
