Warning: This recap includes spoilers for Episode 10 of "Star Trek: Discovery" and a discussion of sensitive and potentially triggering topics. Tyler's past torture by Klingons is making him act erratically as the USS Discovery tries to escape from an alternate universe in this newest episode, "Despite Yourself," which is one of the series' darkest yet. Let's talk about when security officer Ash Tyler Shazad Latif without warning appears to kill another crewmember in this episode. We hear bones crack, and Culber collapses to the floor. So, yeah, that was a shocker. But is Cruz actually permanently dead? Fan lists remind us of other "Star Trek" main characters who died and returned due to manipulations of time or universes remember that the Discovery crew is trapped in an alternate universe, so that could apply , futuristic medicine or some other scriptwriting magic.

Culpepper, there seemed to be another plot twist regarding the identity of the Red Angel. It was difficult to keep track, but let me see if I can run down the key ones:. They obtained something called a time crystal, and Klingons traced it back to them, and murdered them over it. This is just a sampling of this disjointed, crammed episode where simply too much happened, with minimal time to process and several distracting subplots. The biggest reveal Burnham being the Red Angel was an ambitious, interesting twist. And for the love of all that is Gene Roddenberry, what does Ash Tyler do? The theory is that Future Burnham needs the current version to exist in the future.

Putting a mysterious traveler in an opaque space suit and making us guess who is inside is a classic science fiction trick. Which is totally brilliant. Because this episode was so tightly written, this twist feels authentic and thoroughly earned. That first film is about seeing your family through a new lens, thanks to time travel. In its finest moments, Star Trek has always been great at tugging at our heartstrings. And yet, these characters have all been having to deal with their real family members, too.

Star Trek is back! And do you know what I was thinking during this episode of Discovery? What a guy. You know, once he stopped screaming at the sight of a moving TV image? I like to think he would have. However, as well as the dramatic, fan-service flourishes of the Mirror Universe we also got a lot of genuinely interesting stuff. Plot-wise it feels like the start of a new arc, so I wonder how far this one is going to go, but character-wise it touches on basically everything.
