I love the fridge, but…about 6 months ago i replaced the defrost timer on the advice of an appliance parts store. Fridge was always running, freezer was full of ice and fridge unit was warm. I defrosted everything, replaced the timer and the unit is still constantly running. Last week i unplugged it for a couple of hours to melt some of the ice in the freezer, took the back off and melted the ice that was encasing the coils. You replaced the defrost timer without knowing or proving that it was the real problem or bad to begin with. Can you do that at your parts store?

Performing regular maintenance on your refrigerator extends its life and improves its performance. Modern refrigerators do not generally require manual defrosting. They have automatic defrost systems that also reduce frost buildup on the evaporator coils. On older refrigerators it is necessary to manually remove the buildup from the freezer section and the evaporator coil by defrosting your refrigerator. Frost buildup reduces the cooling capacity of the refrigerator and ultimately damages the unit while increasing electrical costs.
Has anyone figured out how to clean the newer refrigerator coils when no brush is small enough to fit between them? I've also tried a vacuum cleaner attachment -- the kind with plastic tubes that get progressively smaller -- and that doesn't work either. I have a new bottom-of-the-line Whirlpool, the coils are already dirty, and the manufacturer has no idea what to do and suggested I call a repair technician every time I need them cleaned. The salesman at Lowe's showed me how their skinniest brush will not fit. I'm wondering if there's any reason I couldn't just put my shop vac on blow. I don't have an air compressor, but is that the stuff that comes in a can for cleaning computer keyboards?

Proper Operation Learn how your appliance is supposed to operate so you can determine if it is malfunctioning. When you open the refrigerator or freezer door, all of the cold air rolls out and is replaced by air with moisture in it. If it is hot and humid in the summer you can see the cold air condense the moist air as it goes into the refrigerator. As soon as you close the door the moist air is drawn across the evaporator coils and freezes in the form of white frost on the coils. The frost will build up over a period of two or three days and would completely fill the back of the freezer section with frost. The evaporator fan could no longer carry the freezing cold air away to other parts of the refrigerator and temperatures would start to rise.
