Window tint is often used to provide privacy or protection from the sun, but you may find you want to remove the tinting. Since the tint is applied with removable adhesive, you can easily remove it, with the exception of the rear window. The only problem with the rear window is the delicate defrost lines that run across the window, under the tinting. If any of the tint breaks off, you can't use any sort of tool to remove it. How to remove rear window tint?

The GF just picked up a 97 Jetta. The previous owner had tinted the rear window a long time ago, and now it's just a melty, blurry mess. We can't even see out the back of the car. I'd like to remove the tint but I'm not sure how - Scraping with a razor blade seems iffy because of the defroster wires. I'm going to try slicing and peeling it away in small spots and then going at it with some or a lot of Goo Gone, but I'm open to suggestions that might make my life easier. Any ideas?

Alternatively, you can spray the windows with ammonia, cover them with garbage bags, and let the combination of sun and ammonia dissolve the adhesive before peeling the tint away.,
