Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? Founded on the remote Island of Iona in far western Scotland, the community traces its inspiration back to the 6th century, when St. Columba found his way from Ireland and established an outpost from which he evangelized all of Scotland. Eventually, he spread a Celtic form of Christianity that still resonates strongly today.

Jesus Beckons: Will You Come and Follow Me?

More by John L. Bell

Cletus Catholic Church in St. Charles, Mo. Few things bring me as much joy as worshiping with my faith community, especially on those special liturgies of holy days. This year, Holy Thursday proved a particularly powerful Mass. Still resonating in my spirit is a song we sang during the ceremonial washing of the feet: The Summons, by John L. The first verse, which I had heard many times before, struck me in a particularly fresh way. Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?

What I do is capo 4. I cry to this song and I am not a big crier but this is an emotional one for me. Actually chose this song for my father's funeral. Will you come and follow me. Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?
